Here’s How to Build a High-Converting Landing Page on Squarespace

Whether you are a school scouting for new students, a firm looking for your next leads, an artist growing your following - whatever the reason, landing pages are essential. Achieving this with Custom Squarespace Website design can make a significant difference. Any way a visitor finds you, be it on social media, via blog posts, or through a marketing campaign, landing page is your go-to page for growing whatever it is that’s essential to your business.

What are landing pages?

Your Squarespace landing page, which can be created from any page on your website, is exactly what it’s called: the place your audience lands after being directed there from an external source. It is usually simply designed, but draws your visitors in by offering them something they want in exchange for information or a sale.

Here are some examples of landing pages I’ve created in the past, and the value they created for the client:

- A page advertising a presale on your upcoming book and allowing sign-ups to be notified, in exchange for email addresses.

- A specific product launch page that invites customers to visit the full site to find additional products for sale.

- A registration page for an upcoming webinar, inviting you to sign up for extended memberships.

- A free organization chart for download for registering a new account.

By getting your website visitors to take a specific action, you have created an easy access point for you to grow your business or audience. A landing page is a page that's designed with a sole purpose in mind: getting visitors to convert to subscribers, clients, or customers.

How to Build a Landing Page in Squarespace (and How to Choose)

Now you see the value in crafting a landing page - so what’s the best way to use one?

There are three methods you can use depending on how you use your Squarespace website, so let’s go over them and what they work best for doing.

01. Using a lock screen [7.0 and 7.1]

Using a lock screen as your landing page is a great opportunity to build up your own “Coming Soon” or “Under Construction” section at no extra cost while you’re launching and constructing the rest of the website. You may also choose to use a lock screen as a landing page if you have protected content for members and want this page to be where users with passwords are directed.

02. Custom Page Layout [7.0 and 7.1]

More commonly used is a custom landing page, the simple, eye-catching page your social media or advertising will have directed your audience. Using 7.1, a custom page is easy to craft with your branding and marketing on full display. Simply create a new page and add blocks as you like, but remember to keep it simple.

You’ll likely want to remove navigation or your headers or footers depending on your page’s purpose and style.

In order to remove the header and footer on a particular page, click the Gear Icon ⚙️ next to the page you want to edit, and then click on Advanced. From there, plug in the code below based on which version of Squarespace you are using. Note that there are small differences for each set of code, which is why it’s important to know which version you’re using! Hint: Click on Help at the bottom of the main menu on Squarespace to see your version!

7.1 Header and Footer Removal Code [All templates]

<style>
#header, footer {display: none!important;}
</style>

7.0 Header and Footer Removal Code [Brine Template Family Only]

<style>
.Header, .Footer {display: none !important;}
</style>

7.0 Header and Footer Removal Code [Bedford Template Family Only]

<style>
Header, #preFooter, #footer {display: none !important;}
</style>

If you aren’t on the Business Plan, but instead are working with a Personal Plan on Squarespace, you won’t have access to Code Injection, so you’ll need to first get the Collection-ID of the page you want to use as a landing page, then paste this code into Custom CSS, swapping out the Collection-ID with the specific one on your website. This can get a little complicated, so feel free to send me a message if you are looking for help with this.

03. Cover Pages [7.0 only]

If your Squarespace website is using 7.0, the method you’ll want use will be to customize a Cover Page into your landing page. A Squarespace Cover Page presents information in a simple but striking webpage and are perfect for Launching Soon websites if you are not ready for a full Landing Page.

Each Cover Page includes a pre-styled layout (around 20 to choose from) and a panel of editing tools for adding imagery, text, buttons, forms, audio, maps, video and more.

To start, select Pages in the Home menu, then select +. Next, choose Cover Page.

Here you have a choice, but it’s important to know that some Cover Page layouts have different choices. Most of the Cover Pages are standard, with buttons, links, text and logos, but some have the ability to add audio, add a map, add more photos, add your latest tweet, and much more. It is similar to Squarespace 7.0 templates, where certain templates and Cover Pages have certain options that others don’t, but the major downside is that Squarespace is phasing these Cover Pages out. They don’t exist in 7.1, so you’re forced to create a custom page layout or do something different. In recent months, I’ve also noticed on Squarespace 7.0 sites using Cover Pages that fonts have started to break, images have started to break and not be able to be re-uploaded, and more issues. In essence, Cover Pages are starting to not be worthwhile to use anymore, and you can’t use them at all on 7.1.

In Conclusion

Creating a beautiful, but most importantly successful landing page can grow your audience and your business and be a key asset to meeting your goals. This is where a Custom Squarespace design specialist comes into play. I’m here to help you do just that. Landing pages aren’t hard to put together, but they do require a bit more finesse than a standard page on your Squarespace website.
